We know you'd all still like to receive your Q during the lockout. After all, when your Q arrives it is pretty hard not to smile.
We will continue to offer free shipping in Canada at least through the end of July 2016. At that time we will review our shipping costs. We will do everything possible to maintain free shipping for you, however given that we are forced to utilize courier services, we may need to implement a small shipping charge for longer distance deliveries.
Free shipping in the US is not affected by the Canada Post lockout. So if you're south of the 49th parallel, please don't fret.
It is our hope it won't come to that and we will be sure to warn everyone in advance. Nobody will be charged for shipping without first being advised. In the meantime, we hope you get outside and enjoy some summer!
As Canadians we all have a story about being south of the 49th parallel and meeting a friendly American who inevitably says, "You're from Canada? Really? Man... you Canadians are all so nice. Do you happen to know Dave from Toronto?" I'm not sure why it is always Dave from Toronto, but apparently at some point that guy had a pretty epic road trip in the States.
While we might be slightly bemused when we get asked about our relationship with Dave, the fact is that while Canada is a big land mass it is a small community. There is actually a reasonable likelihood that, as a Canadian, you may have gone to high school with Dave in Dartmouth before he moved, or you worked with him for a while at the mill in PG, or maybe you had a beer with him at the Peel Pub in Montreal. That kind of thing just happens.
So we Canadians tend to help each other out because there is a good chance we are connected in some way. We pitch in for one another as best we can. Most recently this was (and continues to be) on display with the terrible Fort McMurray wildfires. Here at Q, when we saw this picture doing the rounds, we knew right away that we, too, could help a little bit.
These firefighters have come from all over the country and beyond. They are in Fort McMurray to do an incredibly difficult job and, as the photo makes clear, they work until they can go no further. So, at the beginning of May, we donated over 2500 Q to help keep the firefighters hydrated and energized while they tackle the blaze.
Yesterday we had our own little Dave moment when we received a note from firefighter Kira Beukeboom who received some Q with her gear up in Fort Mac:
Kira and fellow firefighter Patty Massel are both former Uvixens Ultimate players, a team that has been sponsored by Q for several years now. We were happy to support them as athletes in years past and we are even more pleased that we can help them in their critical work up in Fort McMurray.
We had no idea that Kira and Patty were in Fort Mac, but that's the way the small Canadian community works. Chances are you know someone there. If, like us, you don't fight fires but would like to help out, you can check in with the Canadian Red Cross.

There is always so much to do in and around the lower mainland that there never seems to be enough time to sit behind the computer and blog about what we have been doing here at Q. Last year included great events like the Test of Metal, the Stanley Park Open, the Kelowna Across the Lake Swim, and the Western Canadian Squash Doubles to name just a few. There is a lot of activity and even more fun to be had.
This weekend we were at the Whistler Sliding Center for a gorgeous day of racing on the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation World Cup Circuit.
Unless you're a professional photographer it is pretty hard to catch the racers as they go by at speeds of up to 150km/h. We barely caught this sled before it was out of the frame.
As always, the Whistler community was out in full support of these athletes who came from all over the world, including Latvia, Korea, Romania and more. We were all treated to phenomenal races with numerous track records being set. We even saw a few crashes and for the uninitiated those crashes are intense and frightening. Every time the athletes simply got up and walked away from their overturned sleds. Sliding takes strength, power and obviously a lot of courage.
Of course, Canadian fans were well represented and cheering for good reason. In two man bobsleigh Olympic gold medalist Kaillie Humphreys and team mate Melissa Lotholz set a new track record and took first place, extending their lead on the World Cup circuit. On the men's side Canadians Christopher Spring and Lascelles Brown took first place as well, making it an exceptional night for the home side.
We had a great time with the sliding community and the folks at Whistler Sports Legacies who maintain the track and put on this awesome event!
One of the best things about working at Q is the amazing people we encounter almost every day. From Olympians to ultra-running Moms, we're thrilled to meet and work with people who follow their passions and take on amazing challenges. With that in mind, we're particularly pleased to announce our new partnership with the Canadian Ocean Racing campaign. Canadian Ocean Racing is led by Skipper Eric Holden - the 2014 Rolex Canadian Sailor of the Year - and Morgen Watson who was the recipient of the 2014 Gerry Roufs Trophy.
We dropped in on Eric, Morgen and their crew mates Meg, Sandy and Tristan to learn a little bit more about the program and to check out their awesome boat, O Canada, an IMOCA open 60.
Canadian Ocean Racing is dedicated to advancing offshore sailing for Canada and we're stoked to be able to support them. O Canada is preparing to leave Vancouver for a passage through the Panama Canal and to Halifax, Nova Scotia. From Halifax they will head to Toronto in time for Canada Day and the Pan Am games. We've provided Q Energy to keep the crew on top of their game every day as they make their journey.
Ultimately, the goal for Canadian Ocean Racing is for Eric to sail O Canada in the 2016 Vendee Globe single handed round the world race. Sailing single handed around the world in the Vendee Globe is one of the most epic and challenging endeavors any human being can undertake. To give you an idea of how unbelievable and difficult this is, I recommend reading "Godforsaken Sea: Racing the World's Most Dangerous Waters" by Derek Lundy. It is a stunning, captivating and incredible book.
I believe it was the Water Rat from the Wind in the Willows who said, "Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing -- absolutely no thing -- half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats." And while I agree with sentiment entirely, the team on O Canada is certainly not messing about. Here at Q, we're happy to support them - all the way around the world - and we wish them fair winds and following seas.
I'm looking out my window to near cloudless skies and a very green Grouse Mountain. Today is February 17, 2015 and while a large amount of North America is enjoying a proper winter, it is 11C (which is 52F for our American friends and 284 Kelvin for the nerds) here in Vancouver. The North Shore Mountains are closed, Callaghan Valley (Whistler Olympic Park) barely has any snow and the coming week's forecast is positively balmy. It doesn't look like winter wants to visit us this year.
While most folks in Vancouver do enjoy sunny days - it beats the rain - we are still Canadians with a passion for winter sports encoded in our DNA. Even though things aren't looking good at the moment for downhill, snowshoeing or nordic (at least the biathletes can always go shoot guns), there are still plenty of things you can do to stay fit and busy around the lower mainland. Here are a few suggestions:
Trail Running - No cars, no curbs, no worries. The North Shore offers some of the most amazing trails in the world and they are beautiful to run. New to the trails? Why not check out one of the great clinics put on by the good folks at Mountain Madness. Your dog is going to LOVE you for hitting the trails. Don't have a dog? That's a problem easily solved too.
Learn to Surf - Don't wait. Get started now. By the time bikini season comes along you'll look like King Kamehameha out there. Check out what is going to be an awesome time!
Hit a Workout - Head on over to Distrikt Movement just off the Second Narrows Bridge. Jian and his team will put you through your paces. You'll be exhausted, but you'll feel great. Try the Crush Hush - conditioning followed by yoga. We love Distrikt - they're the first ones to tell you that their yoga is dope. It is.
Spin- Got what it takes to be the King of the Mountain? Join Coach Cross and the team at Academy Institute of Higher Stamina for a session in the compuchamber. Hard work. Great people. Huge achievements. You're going to love it.

Sugar gets a bad rap these days. You don't have to look very far to find an article, report or opinion about how too much sugar is contributing to poor health, obesity, diabetes, or any other number of maladies. (Also what about those kids running around in circles making high pitched screeching sounds at Ikea... I'm just sayin') Here at Q, we don't think sugar is so much the problem as too much sugar. After all, human beings have been consuming sugar for tens of thousands of years as part of our natural diet of fruits and vegetables. A lot of the sugar issues of today are simply a result of too much of the stuff.
I'll start with the amount of sugar in Q Energy. Each serving of Q Energy contains only 4 grams of organic cane sugar. For those of you who are spatially challenged like me, that means a full bottle of Q has only 1 standard teaspoon, which happens to equal 1 standard sugar cube, of organic cane sugar. Here's a helpful photo. Bottom line: it isn't much. Someone's Granny puts that in her little cup of tea. Anyway, I'll come back to that.
So what's the problem with too much sugar? In an American Health Association Scientific Statement, a massive raft of really smart people get together to make an important statement about sugar in the modern diet. It includes the following:
"Excessive consumption of sugars has been linked with several metabolic abnormalities and adverse health conditions, as well as shortfalls of essential nutrients."
The emphasis is mine. I encourage you to read the whole statement. The AHA posse of lab coats commence with the correlation between high intakes of sugar and the rightfully scary sounding "worldwide pandemic of obesity and cardiovascular disease." I'm thinking some kind of zombie apocalypse when they say that, but just really slow fat zombies. They also neglect to say anything about those kids at Ikea, but that's probably just a lack of funding.
After the alarm bells, the AHA does give us some useful guidance:
"A prudent upper limit of intake is half of the discretionary calorie allowance, which for most American women is no more than 100 calories per day and for most American men is no more than 150 calories per day from added sugars."
As noted above there isn't a lot sugar in Q Energy - only 4 grams which is a mere 15 calories. A single serving of Q Energy which makes a generous ~700ml (24oz) bottle works out to 15% of the AHA "prudent upper limit" for women and 10% for men. Not much at all. It is also worth noting that there are no artificial sweeteners in Q which can be just as problematic as high doses of sugar.
To further put this in perspective, one bottle of Gatorade (of an equal volume to Q) contains 42 grams of sugar (more than 160 calories). That's 10.5 sugar cubes! For women this is more than 150% of the AHA prudent upper limit of added sugar, and for men it's just over 100%. Yeah, that's just one bottle. If you check that out chances are you'll agree with the AHA: we're getting too much added sugar.
So here at Q Energy, we're offering an effective energy drink that tastes great, has just a little organic cane sugar and contains no artificial anything. We're pretty stoked about that and hope you are too. In the next part of this blog post, I'll explore a little more about the difference between types of sugar without trying to make your eyes slam shut faster than a broken electric garage door. When it comes to speechifying, this sage piece of advice (given by the redoubtable FDR) is wonderful not only for its wisdom, but for the fact that, unlike so much of the advice we receive these days, it actually meets the standard it sets. For us here at Q Energy, meeting the highest standards is a priority in all we do. Throughout the Q Energy blog I will aim to meet those high standards, and of course to be sincere and to be brief... but given how much is always going on around here, it is pretty tough to stay seated.
Before we continue introductions are in order. My name is Jason and I'll be responsible for writing this blog most of the time. The dog is Tabitha, and if you ever read a blog that asks you to send us a subscription to Omaha Steaks, she probably wrote it. I am one of the founders of a Canadian company called Q Energy. We make a healthy sport performance and energy drink designed as an alternative to the high sugar / high caffeine drinks currently on the market. Q Energy features a natural bioflavonoid called Quercetin which does a lot of great things for you, but we'll get into that more in a later post.
